Assessments and Evaluation

Assessments and Diagnosis of ASD, Autism Spectrum Disorder

What is involved?

Before diagnosing a child with Autism our Trans disciplinary team with specific training and experience in evaluating children with autism, will first do an assessment. The aim of the assessment is to answer one diagnostic question, does the individual meet the criteria for autism? The assessment involves an in-depth analysis of the individual’s developmental and medical history, as well as an assessment of his/her current strengths and challenges.

The areas that are assessed include

• Cognition Ability (learning, knowledge and understanding)
• Communication (language and non-verbal)
• Social interaction
• Behavioural (restricted and repetitive)
• Adaptive skills

Information provided by family members and other caregivers (such as day care providers, teachers, employment support staff, residential staff and any current therapy staff) are also crucial to developing the most complete picture of the individual.

Once the assessment has been completed, the team will decide if your child meets the criteria for a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder and a diagnosis will be made.
Diagnosis is usually made from the age of about 18 months onwards. Sometimes a provisional diagnosis is made when the child is very young and is reassessed at a later date.
Parents can contact our team directly, you will need a referral from your GP or pediatrician. Fees for an assessment vary according to the type of assessment.
